Domain names - Registration

A domain name is the 'address' of your website, and a good name can be important. However sometimes selecting your domain name according to your company name is not the best strategy. Search engines look at domains names and compares them to what a user is searching for. As an example if you search for 'Cornwall' you'll notice nearly all the websites in the first few pages of results have the word 'Cornwall' as part of their domain name. Therefore if you had a business selling laptops, it would be better to have a domain name of 'laptops-online.co.uk' than it would be to have 'my-tech-company.co.uk' for example.

Having a domain name that reflects your company name is however also quite important and looks the part on business cards and stationary. It is therefore a good idea to have two domain names, one where the website is based 'laptops-online.co.uk' and a forwarder of 'my-tech'company.co.uk'. This way the website benefits from serach engine relevant words in the domain name, but also has an easy to remember name on business stationary that simply forwards the user to proper domain.

Another example could be for a self catering property in Cornwall. A website could have two address's:
www.self-catering-cornwall.com
www.my-cottages..com

This method is definitely worth considering when planning a website
